Do you take special care of your skin in the winter?

December 18, 2012Baby, it’s cold outside. In fact, today is supposed to be the coldest day of the season so far. You probably bundled up in a coat and a cap today, maybe gloves and a scarf, and warm socks. But what did you do to protect your skin? Cold weather and lots of wind like we’ve had in the Treasure Valley the past few days can really do a number on your skin. Pair that with all that running around to get PTFE Coating things done for the holidays and your skin will start looking dry and, well, tired. Here are some important tips to keep your skin healthy and looking great during the winter months.
Sunscreen Rule #1 of any skin care regimen is to always use sunscreen, no matter what. Harmful UV rays are even more harmful when reflected off the glare of snow. Slather on your sunscreen every day, without exception. Use a broad spectrum formula and apply 30 minutes before heading out. If you’re going to be out all day, say skiing at Bogus Basin this winter, be sure to reapply throughout the day.
Wear sunglasses The skin around your eyes is very delicate, and many of us become painfully aware of this fact as we age. Sunglasses are essential for helping to protect our eyes, and the skin around them, from harmful UV rays.
Use moisturizer Look for an oil-based moisturizer this time of year. This might mean using your night cream during the day. You’ll want to avoid water-based products right now because they won’t retain Non Stick Coating Replacement Spray as much moisture. Oil-based products, on the other hand, will form a better protective barrier, keeping your skin better hydrated.
Avoid hot showers or baths Nothing feels better than jumping into a nice hot shower after being out in the freezing cold, but don’t get that water too hot. It sounds weird, but super-hot water actually dehydrates your skin. You’ll be warm, sure, but your skin will dry out and begin to flake.
Apply lotion After that warm shower or bath, liberally apply lotion to your body, paying special attention to areas like knees and elbows, and anywhere you might have a scar. These areas tend to get dry year-round, and are usually worse in the winter. Put some lotion on your feet and then cover them with cotton socks before bed to keep them soft and smooth. Keep a tube of lotion in your purse or car so you can moisturize on the go.
Don’t forget your lips A coating of lip balm is a must every time you go out. Harsh winds can make your lips feel like raisins. Avoid licking or biting your lips, as this only aggravates them.
Wear gloves The skin on your hands is a little thinner than the skin on the rest of your body. Therefore, it dries out more quickly, and can get itchy and painful during the winter. Cover it up and you’ll have a better chance of avoiding this condition. The Boise Healthy LivingExaminer always keeps a pair of gloves in the car. (In the glove box, isn’t that clever?) So when she’s out and about and needs to pump gas in the Water Based Coatings freezing cold, she never has to suffer. Gloves are easy to find and very well-priced at this time of year. Stock up on a few pairs and keep some in your car, purse, gym bag, or desk.
Drink lots of water Well, it should go without saying, but it seems most of us don’t ever drink enough water. Cold air outside, and the heated air inside our homes and workplaces, can dehydrate us rapidly. Sip water throughout the day and your skin will look brighter and healthier.
