How To Solder

Many ambitious do-it-yourselfers shy away from soldering their copper Ceramic Coating plumbing connections, because of frustrating earlier attempts, fear of burning down their house, or someother negative connotation. Use the following steps to experience professional results.
You will need:Roll of lead-free solderCan of soldering pasteFlux brushSand paperPropane torchCloth rag
Step 1Putting the joint together.
After familiarizing yourself with the various fittings, you will find that there is always a male end of a connection (the pipe or a fitting where one side it is the size of the pipe) and a female end (the "hub" portion of a fitting that a piece of pipe fits into).
There will always be a male and female end being soldered together.
If this is not new construction, then you will have to drain the water out of the system, or at least from the general proximity of the area you are going to be assembling Teflon Coating your new installation. If there is water close by, there will be steam present as you are heating your joint, which will make it almost impossible for you to make a water tight connection. The steam can blow the solder right out of the joint and make it very difficult to get the joint hot enough to get the solder to run.
Step 2Prepping the joint.

Using plumber's tape or sand paper, "clean" the male end of your connection by applying the sandpaper to as much of the pipe or fitting as is going to fit into the hub female end. On 1/2" I.D. pipe, 1/2" of the pipe will slide into the female side, so clean off 3/4" of the end of the pipe making it look very shiny.
Next, using a wire fitting brush -- or for bigger fittings, a piece of sandpaper wrapped around your finger -- clean out the inside of the female end of the fitting, also making it look shiny.
Taking your flux brush, dabble it into the can of acid flux, then apply a coating to both of the shiny ends, the outside of the male end and the inside of the female end.
Step 3Applying the solder.
Unwind about 12" to 16" of solder from the roll and make an "L" shape at the end of it so the leg of the L is 3" or so. Push your male and female ends together and then Non Stick Coatings start applying heat from your torch to the hub of the fitting. The amount of time it will take for attaining the necessary temperature will vary, depending on the size of the pipe and the size of the nozzle on your torch, but 1/2" pipe will heat up in 10 to 15 seconds generally. After applying the heat to the joint for a few seconds, you can take your solder and start to touch the end of it to the joint at the opposite side that you are applying the heat to.
When setting the dial on your torch, adjust for a conical light blue flame within the larger blue flame. Apply the tip of the inner blue cone to the joint as this is the hottest point of the flame.

Nonstick Cookware Safety Concerns - Nonstick Coatings and PFOA

See More Aboutkitchen equipmentnonstick cookwareCooks everywhere, especially low fat cooks, have come to rely on nonstick pans as a great way to cook or bake food, Non Stick Coating from omelets and sauces to perfectly shaped bundt cakes, without being left with a huge sticky clean-up afterwards. In the world of low fat cooking in particular, nonstick pans are a necessity, since they require little or no oil for cooking. But not for the first time, questions have been raised about the safety of nonstick cookware, mostly because of environmental concerns about perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)—also known as C-8—a chemical used to bond the nonstick coating to the pan.PFOA (C-8) and DuPontIn early 2006 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asked eight American companies, including DuPont, maker of Teflon-brand nonstick cookware, to work towards the elimination of PFOA—which they labeled a likely carcinogen—by 2015. PFOA has been shown to cause cancer, low birth weight and a suppressed immune system in laboratory animals exposed to high doses of PFOA. Studies have shown the chemical to be present at low levels in the bloodstream of 9 out of 10 Americans, and in the blood of most newborns. And although the effects of PFOA at lower doses in humans are disputed, there does seem to be a link between PFOA and  raised levels of cholesterol. More seriously, some people have claimed that PFOA exposure caused birth defects in babies born to mothers working at a Teflon plant in the early 1980s.How the chemical is transmitted to humans is unclear, and, thus far, there’s no evidence that nonstick cookware in particular is to blame. But DuPont has been in the cross-hairs of the EPA for some time, and was heavily finedfor Teflon Coating allegedly hiding data for many years on the toxicity of PFOA, and also for contaminating the Ohio River drinking-water supply near its West Virginia plant.Feeling the HeatBack to nonstick pans. Both DuPont and the EPA say that cooks have little to worry about if they use nonstick cookware properly. There’s little dispute that, above certain temperatures—hotter than the smoke point of cooking oils or the point where food is burned—the nonstick coating will break down and release toxic fumes. Any surface that’s subject to extreme temperature will give off toxic gases. According to DuPont, cookware with Teflon Coating Teflon nonstick coating has a recommended maximum use temperature of 500 degrees Fahrenheit and that significant decomposition of the coating will occur only when temperatures exceed about 660 degrees Fahrenheit, which could easily happen if nonstick pans were left dry or empty on a hot burner. Cook's Illustratedmagazine (link is subscription only) reported on tests of nonstick skillets in its May/June 2005 issue, and found that such extreme temperatures could even be reached by cooking some foods on high heat (such as stir-fries). In most cases, the top temperature registered for only a second or two, falling by as much as 200 degrees as the food was moved around the pan. In 2003 the Environmental Working Group(EWG) reported that nonstick coatings "could reach 700 degrees Fahrenheit in as little as 3-5 minutes, releasing 15 toxic gases and chemicals, including two carcinogens." The release of toxic fumes from nonstick cookware is known to kill pet birds at much lower temperatures—as low as 464 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the EWG.Nonstick Cookware and PFOABut while PFOA is used to bond the coating of nonstick cookware, DuPont claims that this particular chemical is subsequently destroyed in the heating process in manufacturing, and not presentin the finished nonstick surface. Trace elements of PFOA were found in one extreme test where the surfaces of the pans were ground up, but today’s nonstick coated pans are tougher than ever before and can withstand less careful handling than previous generations of nonstick cookware.Stick with NonstickThere are two issues here: 1) whether PFOA is present in nonstick cookware, and 2) the emission of PFOA into the environment. As far as cookware is concerned, there seems little reason to toss our nonstick pots and pans just yet. Under normal use, the pans are almost certainly safe. As far as DuPont’s, and other Ceramic Coating chemical companies’, responsibility to the environment is concerned, it seems that appropriate action is being taken to ensure that emissions of PFOA will be all but eliminated within 10 years. Whether the use of PFOA in nonstick coatings and other products will be completely phased out over time is unclear, although companies including DuPont are said to be looking for suitable alternatives.Using Nonstick Cookware SafelyNever leave nonstick pans unattended on an open flame or other heat sourceWhile cooking, don’t let temperatures get hotter than 450 degreesDon’t use metal utensils on nonstick cookwareWash nonstick cookware by hand using nonabrasive cleaners and sponges (do not use steel wool)Don’t stack nonstick cookware on top of each otherKeep pet birds out of the kitchenElsewhere on the WebEPA on PFOADuPont on PFOAEnvironmental Working GroupSuggested ReadingThe Nonstick DebateTeflonSilicone BakewareSuggested ReadingWhich Type of Cookware is Safest for Cooking?Related ArticlesNonstick vs. Uncoated Cookware: Which Should I Choose?Top Picks for Eco-Friendly CookwareNonstick Cookware Tips: How to Use and Care for Nonstick CookwareIs There Eco-Friendly Nonstick Cookware?Lagostina Ticino Non-Stick Skillet Review

HowStuffWorks New Nonstick Technologies

New Nonstick TechnologiesFor decades, fluoropolymer nonstick Non Stick Coatings coatings have ruled the market, but within the last couple of years, a few new technologies have appeared on the scene. Most of these are based on two related technologies -- silicon ceramics and silicone. Cuisinart's Ceramica, for example, is a nonstick ceramic that was first used in its GreenGourmet line. The coating does not contain PTFE or PFOA.
Another ceramic nonstick coating is Thermolon. The coating is mostly composed of silicon and oxygen. It is applied as a single layer over the metal of the pan and then followed by a protective or decorative top coat [source: Phillips]. The manufacturer promotes the new technology as Teflon Coating PTFE-free and more eco-friendly due to less energy usage during the production process [source: Phillips]. Thermolon has a number of different formulations of its coating for specific nonstick cookware needs. GreenPan brand cookware uses Thermolon technology for its nonstick surface [source: GreenPan].
Another technology is silicone-based. You've probably seen or used silicone bakeware -- a product called NP2 takes advantage of silicone's slipperiness to create a PTFE-free nonstick coating [source:AkzoNobel]. Tramontina's new Eco-friendly Cookware line uses the NP² nonstick technology. The company states that this cookware can be used to both sear and brown foodsas well as used in the oven up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177 degrees Celsius) [source: Tramontina USA].
Thermolon technology arrived on the U.S. market in 2007, while Ceramica technology and NP² became available to consumers in 2008. Due to the relatively short time Ceramic Coating these new technologies have been on the market, little research has been done on their performance. However, it's clear that in the decades since the discovery of PTFE, technology continues to make food preparation an easier and faster process.

How To Do Motorcycle Powder Coating

Powder coating is the coat of dry powder that is applied as a surface finishing technique. There are two types of powder used in powder coating. The first one is called thermoplastic Ceramic Coating powder. The thermoplastic powder is capable of melting when it is exposed to heat. The other type is the thermosetting powder. The thermosetting powder does not melt when it is exposed to heat.
A powder coating can be used in different types of vehicles, especially on motorcycles. There are some advantages of using powder coating instead of using the regular liquid paint. The manufacturing of powder coating produces less hazardous materials that can harm the environment. Healthy Non-Stick Cookware

Photo Caption The more inert the cookware surface, the less likely it will react with food while cooking.Photo Credit Ryan McVay/Photodisc/Getty ImagesIn order to avoid any chemical reaction between food and cooking surfaces, you should avoid using cookware with coatings that could Ceramic Coating contaminate food when utensils hit a high temperature. The more inert the cooking surface, the less likely any chemical reaction will occur to make cooked food unhealthy.
TeflonThe DuPont trademark non-stick coating Teflon, generically known as polytetrafluorethylene, or PTFE, can release a gas at high heat called PFOA, which has been labeled as a human carcinogen by the EPA Science Advisory Board. Care2.com states that DuPont is taking part in a voluntary program to eliminate sources of PFOA in the manufacture of Teflon by 2015, but avoiding the coating in cookware could supply peace of mind that no possible toxic substance would make it into your food.
Traditional IronThe traditional iron cooking pots and frying pans transfer very little taste or other non-food elements to food when cured properly with a light coating of Non Stick Coating cooking oil. Besides proper curing with oil, Care2.com states that the trick with any non-coated surface is to make the surface hot enough to sear food, which releases water from the food and keeps it from sticking. Avoid preparing soup or acidic food in cast iron, as this will leach iron into the food that can spoil the taste and put iron that isn't bio-available into your food, according to Rebecca Wood, author of "The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia."

Ozeri 8 Green Earth Textured Ceramic Non-stick Frying Pan

8″ Green Earth Textured Ceramic Non-stick Frying Pan, 100-Percent PTFE and PFOA FreeRating:Star5StarStarStarStarDecember 19, 2013I am an eggaholic; I could it them for breakfast, lunch and dinner – and I often do! One downside to that is that I go through non-stick pans quite frequently. I Teflon Coating purchased an inexpensive PFOA free frying pan from my local Ollie’s a few months back that I really loved. Unfortunately, the non-stick coating recently started to deteriorate and I started getting little pieces of it in my eggs. I knew it was time to buy yet another one, and I was not looking forward to purchasing again so soon. I was recently contacted by the wonderful company, Ozeri, to review their all-new and improved 8″ Green Earth Textured Ceramic Non-stick Frying Pan, 100-Percent PTFE and PFOA Free. I readily agreed, but as someone who goes through these pans quite often, I tend to know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised once I received my pan in the mail. It is a beautiful pan. I loved the lime green color. It was very well made; not too heavy and not too light. The handle is also very well made and thick; I hate burning my hand once a pan heats up. The silicon coated handle is also very comfortable and easy to grip, which helps with handling the pan. Once I Ceramic Coating cooked my eggs, I noticed that the pan was heating evenly, something I was not used to. I would normally get hot spots and places where the egg was starting to cook but not in others. The elevated texture in the bottom of the pan helps to eliminate that problem by ensuring even cooking and the pattern keeps the food from sticking. As a result, my eggs came out light, fluffy and perfect. All of the eggs were on my plate and nothing was left in the pan. The next challenge was cleaning, which was a breeze. The Ozeri pan was very quick and easy to clean.
Overall, I was very pleased and impressed by the performance of the Ozeri Green Earth pan. Even more than that, I was impressed by the accompanying documentation that explains about the pan, how to properly care for it and use it. That is very important to ensure the life of your cookware and to get the most out of it – and your food. The insert demonstrated that they are passionate about their product and committed to providing accurate information and healthy alternatives to traditional cookware.  The pan also comes with a limited lifetime warranty which is a plus.

Cooking tips for stir frying

April 29, 2009
Curry stir frySpring is coming. I can smell it in the air. With any luck, it’s the charge of lightening and not the next snow storm.) At any rate, if you’re not there yet, chances are you’re thinking spring training (running, cycling, bathing suit season), which leads to lighter, healthier food. PTFE Coatings That’s not to say you haven’t been eating healthfully all winter long <wink, wink> … yeah, you know who I’m talking about.
OK, so how do you go easy on dinner especially after a workout that leaves you famished and in search of the nearest snacks while you’re cooking? Try a stir fry.
You probably have stirred up a few fries in your days, but have you gotten them just right? You know: cooked but juicy protein, hot but crispy vegetables, more than soy sauce seasoning.
Here are a few tips to get you on the right path.
1. Cut all the food first, keeping meats and vegetables separate, and cut them all about the same size for even cooking.
2. If you’re using a regular wok, heat it on medium high for 2 minutes before adding oil.
(If you’re using a non-stick wok, only heat it a few seconds – pre-heating without oil in it can ruin the non-stick coating.)
3. Swirl the oil around in the pan to coat the sides.
4. Drop in a few slices of garlic and ginger to season the oil and cook them for about 1 minute.
5. Turn up the heat to high and cook the protein/meat first until it changes color (meat will lose its pink, chicken will turn white, tofu will get brown).  High heat will seal in the juices. Remove it before cooking the vegetables.
6. Cook the vegetables in the following order: dense vegetables (broccoli, carrots), soft vegetables (peas, mushrooms), greens. PTFE Spray Coating Stir the vegetables constantly to cook through.
7. Return the meat to the wok and add your sauce. Stir to coat, reduce the heat to medium, and cover for a few minutes to allow the meat to finish cooking and the vegetables take on the sauce but not become one flavor.
Oh, and if you’re too hungry to wait for this quick cook dinner, cut up some extra veggies and snack on them as you go.

Ridiculously Over-The-Top Modifications to Deadly Weapons

#3.Knife Guns
Starts With:
The knife, the sharp object designed for stabbing people when they piss you off.
Becomes Ridiculous By:
Adding firearms, and in one memorable case, brass knuckles.

Ever since guns were invented, manufacturers have been swirling firearms and knives together like peanut butter and chocolate into ridiculous, half-baked morsels of Non Stick Coating wretched stupidity. One example is the G.R.A.D. RS1 Knife, which packs five .22 caliber rounds into the handle and apparently is so incredibly unsafe/illegal it doesn't even have an official site, only a collection of YouTube videos:

Predating this masterwork is the Elgin Cutlass Pistol, a flintlock/bowie knife hybrid evidently designed for Final Fantasy characters to use on the Oregon Trail.

In 1837, the U.S. Navy outfitted Charles Wilkes, commander of the United States Exploring Expedition in the South Pacific, with 150 Elgin Cutlass Pistols for use on the voyage. This was possibly due to an intense dislike for Charles Wilkes.
Finally we have this gem, designed by an unknown gunsmith in the 19th century--presumably after losing a substantial wager.

Yes, it's the knife/gun/brass knuckles combo. If someone managed to actually kill another human being with this Seussian marvel, a new word would have to be invented to Ceramic Coating describe the cause of death (we suggest "fistablasting"). Why the inventor thought brass knuckles would succeed after the abject failure of both gun and blade has been lost to the mists of history, and to a more significant degree the mists of alcoholism and shame.

Video game characters. Yeah, when we mocked the gross impracticality of the Final Fantasy Gunsword in a previous article, we had no idea people ever actually owned the things.
#2.Bomb-Covered Bombs a.k.a. Reactive Material
Starts With:
Your standard bomb. You know, that really explosive thing you drop on people when they piss you off.
Becomes Ridiculous By:
Turning what holds the bomb into a bomb.
The U.S. military is always figuring out ways to kill people more efficiently, and the very blandly named "Reactive Material"is one of their latest ideas. It also happens to redefine the dick move.
Reactive materials work by sticking a nasty explosive compound, such as powdered aluminum, into a coating with something really good at keeping it from blowing the hell up, such as Teflon.

The resulting mixture is inert, which means you can pretty much abuse the stuff with a jackhammer and not run the risk of vaporization. The fun doesn't start until the bomb is actually dropped.
The explosion of the bomb triggers the powdered aluminum Teflon Coating mixture, which is stuck to the bomb's external casing. So whereas before a target surviving the initial blast would simply be torn apart by huge chunks of jagged metal, thanks to RM those jagged chunks of metal are now on fire and occasionally exploding. This provides the tactical advantage of making the enemy more dead.

#1.The M-388 "Davy Crockett" Nuclear Bazooka
Starts With:
The weapon that practically defines overkill: the bazooka.
Becomes Ridiculous By:
Sticking a nuclear warhead on it.
The Davy Crockettalready seems like the most counter-intuitive weapon ever invented--a short-range, radioactive bomb for soldiers to use on the ground amounts to little more than a "self destruct" button--but it gets a lot more stupid with the details.

Designed during the Cold War as a defense against Soviet ground expansion in Europe, the weapon had absolutely zero accuracy. Its three-man firing team would just kind of point it towards the nearest battalion of Commies and pull the trigger, hopefully not while downwind. The M-388 only had an effective firing range of about two and a half miles, and laid a cloud of lethal radiation for a quarter-mile around its blast radius.
So, odds were pretty good the three-man firing crew wouldn't get to use their bayonets made out of uranium.
Really Will Only Be Used By:

Duke Nukem. Or, possibly the Brotherhood of Steel.

MEGADYNE MEDICAL PRODUCTS' PATENT UPHELD; ASPEN CONMED ENJOINED

MEGADYNE MEDICAL PRODUCTS' PATENT UPHELD; ASPEN/CONMED ENJOINEDSANDY, Utah, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- MegaDyne Medical Products of Sandy, has obtained a $2.1 million judgment and permanent injunction against Aspen Laboratories of Denver and ConMed Corp. of Utica, N.Y. (NASDAQ: CNMD).  United Teflon Coatings States District Court Judge Bruce S. Jenkins entered the judgment on Friday, Oct. 29, based upon the unanimous finding of a 12-member jury that MegaDyne's patent on disposable surgical electrodes was valid and that Aspen/ConMed had willfully infringed the patent.Dr. G. Marsden Blanch, an ear, nose and throat surgeon in Salt Lake City, invented the product, which is a surgical blade coated with a non- stick coating.  The invention eliminates the problem of tissue build-up on the blade during surgery.  Before the invention, surgeons were required to scrape or sand tissue from the blade, causing expensive downtime during surgery.  Blanch co-founded MegaDyne in 1985 to manufacture and sell the non-stick blade and other products.  The surgical community quickly embraced the non-stick blade, and the company has grown to a multimillion dollar business.Aspen/ConMed argued that it bought the rights to make a non-stick coated blade when it purchased the assets of the now-defunct Trident Surgical Corp. in 1983.  However, the Trident blade was coated with a different substance and did not have the non-stick feature that is covered by the MegaDyne patent. The jury awarded damages of $1,092,472.96.  Judge Jenkins doubled the damaged award based upon the jury's finding that Aspen/ConMed's infringement was willful.  The court also issued a permanent injunction prohibiting any further sales of the Aspen/ConMed product.  Both Aspen's original non-stick blade with gray-colored coating and its newer blade with a brown-colored coating were Water Based Coatings found to infringe and can no longer be sold.MegaDyne President Gary R. Kohl and Rodney R. Parker of Snow, Christensen & Martineau, legal counsel for MegaDyne, agree that this judgment is a decisive victory.  "This should be the last chapter in the enforcement of the MegaDyne patent," said Parker.  "This verdict sends a clear warning to other companies who might consider marketing a non- stick coated blade covered by the MegaDyne patent."-0-                        11/5/93/CONTACT:  Marsha Fetzer, 801-595-1155/(CNMD)CO:  MegaDyneMeg´a`dynen. 1. Transfer artichokes to a serving dish.
Wipe out pan and return to the heat, raising heat a bit. Season drained and trimmed scallops with salt and pepper. Add 1 turn of olive oil to the very hot pan and immediately place the scallops in the pan. Sear the scallopsin a single layer, causing them to caramelize, 2 minutes on each side. Nonstick coatings on cookware and bakeware provide for healthier cooking using less oils and also reduce cleaning time.  But improper care can ruin the finish on non-stick pots or baking pans, causing foods to stick.  It can also make cleaning your best nonstick pots more difficult, and reduce Teflon Coating the lifespan of your pans.  Here are 10 ways you can ruin a non-stick pot or pan if proper care and maintenance isn't applied.  Protect your non-stick cookware or bakeware investment by avoiding these and enjoy your non-stick pots and pans for many years.  Need to upgrade your nonstick pots and pans?  Compare pricesof non-stick pots and pans, and keep your new pan looking like new, by avoiding my 10 ways to ruin it.
1. Cutting Serving Portions With a Metal Knife or UtensilCutting desserts or meatloaf in the pan with a metal knife or utensil can pierce the coating leaving your pans unsightly, cause foods to stick and rust to form. Use rubber or silicone spatulas to portion and serve from your cookware or bakeware.2. Storing Pans ImproperlyStoring pans haphazardly along with other metal implements, can cause scratches in the finish. Always nest your nonstick frypans and bakeware carefully, and do not alloy other metal pan covers with thin sharp edges to sit inside your pans.3. Drastic Water Temperature ChangesPlacing a very hot non-stick frypan into cool or lukewarm dishwater can cause your pan to warp. A warped pan will not have even heat distribution and cooking abilities will be reduced. Always allow your pan to cool completely before immersing it.4. Using Metal Spatulas, Whisks or Non Stick Coatings TongsRefrain from using any metal utensils in your nonstick to stir, turn food, scrape food residue, or blend foods right in the pan. The best utensils to use are wood, plastic, or silicone. Many companies are now making silicone whisks which are terrific for that quick blending. Even occasional fork-turning can nick and scratch your pan.5. Cleaning With a Scouring Cleanser PadUsing scouring products that are metal based or have harsh cleansers, can wear off the coating on your pans. Always use plastic scourers or soft sponges. Allowing your pan to soak for a moment will usually loosen foods and enable you to clean it with just warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth.6. Cleaning Pans in a DishwasherDishwasher detergents generally are too harsh for most nonstick cookware and kitchenware, and will eventually cause the finish to wear off. Bakeware that has scratches in it may also not dry completely and could rust. Handwash your nonstick implements and dry completely before PTFE Spray Coating storing.7. Cooking on High HeatMost nonstick cookware is made for low and medium heat cooking. Too high a heat can wear down or blister the finish, as well as cause pans to warp. To maintain your pan and increase its lifespan, follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding cooking heat.8. Storing Foods in Your Nonstick PansFoods should never be stored in the pans but should be removed and pans should be cleaned carefully and dried before storing.9. Cutting Your Pizza With a CutterCutting your pizza right in the nonstick pizza pan will mar the finish. Always slide your pizza out unto a wooden cutting board, and then apply the pizza cutter to portion servings.10. Using Your Bread Pans for Meats or High Acid FoodsNonstick bread pans provide for easy removal of fresh baked bread. But using these same pans for meatloaf or other foods will wear off the finish quicker, as some foods reduce the lifespan of your pans, making them harder to clean and more prone to rust. Keep bread pans just for bread, and designate another pan for other foods. This way you'll ensure no pan residue ends up on your freshly baked bread.Tips and Tricks on Home OwnershipPromotional Feature: View this video series to learn how to take good care of your house.Read MoreSuggested ReadingGadgets & ToolsCaring for Your Best Non-stick Cookware or BakewareBundt Pans - Fun CakesRelated Guide PicksNonstick - Stir Frying Made EasyDefinition of AnodizedCookwareOther Related Resources & Guide PicksTablewareThe Non-Stick DebateNonstick Meat Loaf PansRelated ArticlesHow Teflon Sticks to Nonstick PansKeeping Nonstick Bread Pans - NonstickLoaf Pans - Practical Mini Loaf PansBakers Select Non-Stick Large Heart-Shaped Pan ReviewBakers Select Non-Stick Baking Sheet, Loaf Pan Bakeware Reviews

Is Lanolin Cream Bad for a Breastfeeding Baby

Photo Caption Lanolin may soothe sore nipples.Photo Credit Comstock Images/Comstock/Getty ImagesDuring the early days of breastfeeding, many nursing mothers struggle Teflon Coating with some amount of nipple irritation. A poor latch, sensitive skin and simply getting used to breastfeeding may cause tenderness. Lanolin creams are often recommended to treat and moisturize the skin, soothe discomfort and help with healing. While purified lanolin is safe for breastfeeding babies and their moms, knowing how to choose the right product is essential.
LanolinLanolin is a moisturizing emollient derived from sheep's wool. The sheep secretes lanolin to protect its skin and waterproof its wool. Sometimes called wool grease, the lanolin is thick, waxy, greasy and yellow in color. It has a slight odor, even when fully purified. Various Water Based Coatings grades of lanolin are available, based on their purity. Breastfeeding mothers should choose highly purified lanolin, sold as 100 percent purified, medical-grade lanolin, according to La Leche League International. There are a number of different brands available in the baby-product section of your local grocery store or pharmacy.

How to Make Bakery-Quality Cookie-Pan Cookies

Even though Wilton is usually my first pick when it comes to cookie and treat pans there are a lot of other companies out there that are making comparable items. Some of them cost more, some of them cost less but you need to get hands-on experience with them before you invest in a series. Ceramic Coating Norpro is another company that offers non-stick cavity styled cookie pans; their selection is growing and includes some nice seasonal pans for Easter, Christmas and Halloween as well as basic ones that you can use for day to day baking. I started making cookies using treat pans a couple years ago; you get so much more depth from them and if you use something like a gingerbread recipe there's no need to decorate them with royal icing if you don't want to.
What Is A Cookie Pan? A cookie pan is designed to make baking easier. Most of them are non-stick but some of the older ones that were also used to make "cookies on a stick" or other treats are basic aluminum without a non-stick coating to them. Cookie Pans generally have six to twelve cavities but there are some that have as little as four and as many as twenty. Wilton carries a lot of different seasonal cookie pans for Christmas and Valentine's Day as well as basic ones that can be used for day to day treats but more and more companies are starting to branch out and enter the market. The non-stick pans are the easiest to work with but you need to use some care with them when clean and storing them. Depending on the manufacturer these could be called a Non Stick Coating number of things includingcookie pans, treat pans, cookie pods and mini pans. Never rely solely on a photo of an item if you are shopping for them online.
Prices on Pans Can Vary:Most of them are in the ten to fifteen dollar range but that price will vary depending on the manufacturer, size, depth of design and coating. You really need to read the details about cookie pans before you buy them to make sure they are going to be something that you are going to be able to use for your baking projects. Some of them are designed to make cookies while others are for mini treats, cookies on a stick or edible embellishments. Investing in cookie pans can be a good decision if you think you are going to get a lot of use from them; even if you only use them a couple times a month they can provide a quicker and easier way to make gourmet top shelf looking cookies and since you are making them yourself you will know exactly what is in them.
How Do You Care For A Cookie Pan? The same way you would any other coated or non-coated baking pan. It is important to wipe out the cavities of the pan between batches; this will help to keep the shape and design of each cookie perfect and eliminate burnt pieces that could result if there are left over bits from another batch. I prefer to store mine in a large plastic tote with a piece of cardboard between them so that there is less of a risk of the details of the cookie cavities getting smashed, dented or dinged. PTFE Coating Most pans are dishwasher safe but I do not recommend this because you never know when something is going to get stuck in a cavity and need to get picked out. That could end up chipping the non-stick coating and result in stuck cookies when you go to use the pan again.
What Are Some of The Most Popular Cookie Pans? Ones that offer you a variety of shapes and designs and can be used for more than one holiday or season. The "Fall Themed Cookie Pan" from Jousters Court is a twelve cavity pan with unique designs; not only can you use it for Thanksgiving but for the entire fall season. You can make some incredible looking colorful cookies but one of my favorite things to do with this pan is to make a batch of dough then break it in to three sections. I add a small amount of food tint to each of them (usually brown, yellow and light green). You can use those mini batches of dough to make different colored cookies but for a more dramatic look you can take small bits from each of the colors and create a marble coloring so they look more like real leaves. This is a great, easy and fun project for kids too and they will love being able to take them to school. You can also teach them about the different leaves and the trees that they come from as well as where they can be found in different parts of the country and the seasons in which they appear.
In addition to seasonal pans, there are ones that you can use for everyday cookies. Some of the most popular are hearts, smiley faces, shapes and numbers. I am still trying to find a decent sized set of alphabet cookie pans for less than fifty dollars. The Halloween and Christmas pans are an excellent investment because you can make a ton of detailed cookies in a short amount of time. Kids can help decorate them or just help box them up when they have cooled. If you are a crafter, you can use slightly scratched or dented cookie pans to make miniature soaps or ornaments from plaster. Once you use a mold for a non-food purpose you should not try to use it to make edible items in it regardless of how many times it is washed. Seasonal pans are a nice find when they are on clearance or sale after a holiday.
What Kind of Dough Can You Use? Anything that doesn't have nuts or chocolate chips in it! A gingerbread or basic sugar cookie recipe will work best if you are planning on decorating them but you can add tints or dyes to the dough to make different colored cookies (or mix small amounts of dough together for a marbled effect). If you like to use colored sugar on your cookies you are going to be out of luck when using a cookie pan; you need to add the sugar before the cookie is baked to get the best adherence. Since you are baking the cookies inverted you can't add sugar to the cavity of the pan because it will melt and then crystallize. Basically you will end up with a thin candy shell over parts of the cookie. Regardless of the dough you pick you need to make sure that you have enough in the cavity when you are doling it out. You don't have to pack it in to the mold, as it warms in the oven it will relax and get in to all of the detailed areas.
Depending on the mold, baking times are going to vary. Since it isn't like baking on a cookie sheet you are going to want to watch the edges. The easiest way to get the cookies out of the pan is to lay a cooling rack over the top of the cookie pan and flip it over. This is where the non-stick pans come in handy; I have only had a couple of them stick in the hundreds of batches that I've made. You are going to want to let the cookies cool off for a couple minutes in the pan before you flip them so they don't develop cracks. That can happen when the temperature changes too quickly. You can make these well in advance of a holiday so you always have something sweet to serve last minute guests; just store them in air tight containers and keep them out of reach of the elves.
What Are The Benefits of Making Your Own Cookie-Pan Cookies? When it comes to using the cookie pans, there are a number of pros. You can change the recipe to add more flavor or colors, you'll know exactly what is in them and when they were made, the ability to customize them and you can make a ton of different shapes and sizes without having to pay upwards of a dollar a piece for them from a bakery. Some of the gourmet shops here charge three to four dollars for a hand decorated four inch cookie; while most cookie molds have cookies that are smaller than that you can buy larger molds.
You don't need to use the cookie pans on a cookie sheet like you would with a silicone mold; they are sturdy and strong enough to be used on their own. With a little bit of care Teflon Coating they can last for years but I do strongly suggest getting the non-stick versions so they are easier to clean up and there is less of a chance of things sticking to the inside of the cavities.
About the only con to making cookie pan cookies is that you will get spoiled with the simplicity. It will make you loathe dragging outcookie cuttersand then having to do a lot of hand decorating. While you always have the option to use royal icing as a way to decorate the cookies made in cookie pans, if you are working with something that has a lot of detail to it you will be able to serve them 'as is' and you will still have incredible looking treats. Since using cookie pans are a lot easier than cutting dough with a cutter it makes it a nicer and simpler project for younger kids to help with. Some of my fondest memories ofmy boysare when they were covered in flour helping me mix dough in the kitchen or trying desperately to pipe royal icing on a cookie and get the edge lines perfect.
