Is Lanolin Cream Bad for a Breastfeeding Baby

A poor latch, sensitive skin and simply getting used to breastfeeding may cause tenderness. Lanolin creams are often recommended to treat and moisturize the skin, soothe discomfort and help with healing. While purified lanolin is safe for breastfeeding babies and their moms, knowing how to choose the right product is essential.
LanolinLanolin is a moisturizing emollient derived from sheep's wool. The sheep secretes lanolin to protect its skin and waterproof its wool. Sometimes called wool grease, the lanolin is thick, waxy, greasy and yellow in color. It has a slight odor, even when fully purified. Various Water Based Coatings grades of lanolin are available, based on their purity. Breastfeeding mothers should choose highly purified lanolin, sold as 100 percent purified, medical-grade lanolin, according to La Leche League International. There are a number of different brands available in the baby-product section of your local grocery store or pharmacy.
